Hendersonville Featured on National Geographic Map
Downtown Hendersonville is the only historic downtown in Western North Carolina to be included on a pull-out Guide Map to the Appalachians inserted in the April 2005 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine. A total of 356 sites from 13 states were selected from over 1,000 nominees to be featured on the map.

National Geographic Society, the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), and the state of North Carolina were partners in the project as a response to a loss of WNC tourism following last fall’s hurricanes. The state asked Henderson County Travel & Tourism to nominate appropriate sites for the map, and Travel & Tourism worked with materials from Downtown Hendersonville, Inc., and fifteen or sixteen other candidates and sent the information to National Geographic who then made the final selections.

In addition to Historic Downtown Hendersonville, The Flat Rock Playhouse, The Carl Sandburg Home, The Curb Market, and The Woodfield Inn were selected for inclusion in the map.
National Geographic is planning to place the map in a featured spot on its website, which receives an estimated 5 to 7 million visitors each month. www.nationalgeographic.com
